Nova Singers

It was the summer of 1976 and the nation was celebrating its Bicentennial. For a dozen or so singers, mostly alumni of Stranahan High School in Broward County, Florida, a search for a musical outlet had begun. One of the local colleges had just discontinued their community chorus leaving the singers stranded. Peggy Joyce Barber, Music Director at Stranahan, was contacted and soon after the group gathered in her living room to discuss starting a new chorus. On that summer night this small group of musicians had no idea what was involved in starting or running a chorus. All they knew was that they wanted to try. They found a friend in Nova University which did not have a music program but agreed to become their sponsor. With borrowed music they hastily elected a board and within a few months they presented their first concert as the Nova University Community Singers.

Over the years names have changed. Nova University has grown to the acclaimed Nova Southeastern University and the chorus became known as Nova Singers . The group has also expanded to more than 130 voices and maintains a music library of over 600 selections. Their repertoire is as diverse as their membership, with music including classics to jazz, patriotic to sacred, rounded out with standards and Broadway pops. Nova Singers performs a dozen or more concerts each year. They have also performed in Europe , New York , Washington , D.C. and throughout Florida . In the summer of 2003 the group took their talents on the road again with a tour of North Carolina.

Many of the original founders of Nova Singers still sing today. Peggy Joyce Barber as Musical Director, Dana Davis, the group's talented Accompanist, and Chuck Stanley, Associate Musical Director round out the cornerstones of this premiere choral group. And for its members, it's a way of life extending beyond the rehearsal hall and stage to a world of lifelong friendships, opportunities for education, personal growth and leadership development. Being a part of the Nova Singers is filled with song, laughter, and a passion for soothing the cares of the world with harmony. (Description and photo taken from the group's web site.
