Jonathan Rathbone
Jonathan Rathbone has been a composer, arranger, singer and choir trainer most of his life. He started his musical career in Coventry Cathedral Choir (England). He was later a choral scholar at Christ's College, Cambridge (where he read mathematics), before studying for a second degree at the Royal Academy of Music, specializing in singing and composition.
He sang with the BBC Singers before joining the world-famous Swingle Singers. He stayed with them for twelve years, and was musical director for eight of those years. During that time, he arranged and wrote the majority of their repertoire, creating hundreds of pieces of music for them. He has worked with many of the world's leading musicians and orchestras including Pierre Boulez, Luciano Berio, Stefane Grappelli, Sir George Martin, Steve Reich and French pop star Etienne Daho.
Since leaving the group, he has continued to write, arrange and orchestrate for many groups and orchestras, including the BBC Concert Orchestra, Michael Ball and Sir Cliff Richard, amongst others.
In the world of close harmony he continues to work with many groups and choirs throughout Europe, giving lectures, seminars and workshops on a variety of topics, ranging from the history of close harmony, improvisation, through to arranging for voices. He has taught singing in various educational establishments over the last eight years or so. During that time, he has become increasingly aware of the need for a course such as this!
