Topic-Specific Information

Copyright Laws and the Music Educator
This is very useful information (available online at the link above) provided by MENC, that talks about what you need to know, as an educator or choir director, about music copyright laws.

ASCAP & BMI
ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers ) & BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.) now provide a listing of the repertory of copyrighted music for which each claims to hold assigned performance rights. By identifying which organization holds a copyright to the material, groups can pay a licensing fee to that organization rather than to each individual organization, as was necessary in the past when these listings were not available. With this information, groups can also use music that does not have a copyright (i.e. public domain titles) and therefore eliminate the need to pay licensing fees. These listings are available on the Internet. Go to www.bmi.com for information on the music controlled by BMI and www.ascap.com for that controlled by ASCAP.

www.21stCenturyChorister.com
21stCenturyChorister.com is a new online gathering place that aims to be somewhere people can go online for information, contacts, and resources related to choral singing. There are articles, a forum, and a multimedia section that will soon offer downloadable music resources.
