Rockapella
If you ask anyone if they've ever heard of a cappella music, they say "Uhh..I *think* so..." But if you ask them if they remember, say, the group that did that "Carmen San Diego" show a while back, the light of recognition shines in their faces, and they snap their fingers and say "Oh YEAH! I remember them!".
The original Rockapella quartet, a group of young Brown University alumni, was formed for the sheer love of performing; singing on New York City street corners with a hat out at their feet. Eventually they caught the eye of a producer putting together a television special about the growing genre of "contemporary" a cappella music. After filmmaker Spike Lee and entertainer Debbie Allen signed on to host this program, it became Spike & Co.: Do It A Cappella, and aired for several years on PBS, producing a soundtrack and video (now many years out of print) as well. This in turn led to a regular appearance on Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, a kid's game show on American public television, which in turn led to a Japanese recording contract.
Personnel have changed over the years, although the addition of Jeff Thacher as vocal percussionist in 1992 helped define the "vocal band" sound. A 1998 Folger's commercial appearance brought them back into national recognition and helped them land their first U.S. record label contract. Their fan base just continues to grow as they maintain their position as the kings of contemporary a cappella.
