The Singing Men
In 1977, a quartet was formed at then Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama comprised of Leroy Hampton, Elverton Mapp, Clinton Williams, and Douglas Bell. Providing music for the weekly Bible radio program "Your Bible Speaks", hosted by Dr. Elder Richard Tottress, they became known as "The Your Bible Speaks Men of Music".
Word of the quartet spread quickly and, within a year, other men joined and the quartet eventually grew into a male chorus. As the notoriety of the male chorus expanded, their performances became much sought after events.
At one of their performances, Dr. Elder Earl E. Cleveland, well-known author, extraordinary evangelist, and professor of theology at Oakwood College, had the responsibility of introducing the male chorus to the audience. In true Dr. Cleveland style, he took the liberty to present the male chorus as "The Singing Men". Several members of the group were also members of the Oakwood College Church. Therefore, the group extended the moniker given to them by E.E. Cleveland and have been known as "The Singing Men of the Oakwood College Church" from that time until 2007.
In late 2007, Oakwood College gained University status. Keeping pace with this monumental accomplishment, in January 2008, the group modified its name and is now known as The Singing Men of The Oakwood University Church.
The present members of The Singing Men of the Oakwood University Church are Douglas Bell, Cecil Mabry, Simon McGauley, Leon Rewan, Eugene Rogers, Elverton Mapp, Dr. Rodney Morris, Wyatt D. Phillips, S. David Auguste, and Plenty Germany.
The Singing Men of the Oakwood University Church have been sharing their ministry of Christian a cappella music and fellowship with churches of many denominations in and around the Huntsville-Madison area. They present their music ministry at civic events, schools, colleges and universities, weddings, funerals, and fundraisers. They also minister through their music at nursing facilities and in the homes of the sick and shut-in.
The Singing Men are nationally and internationally traveled. They have been privileged to perform their music in London and in Ivory Coast, West Africa, appearing on Adventist World radio. The group has also appeared on other radio broadcasts and sang on television shows. In September 2006, they were the featured guest on "Think It Over", an Oakwood College-based radio program hosted by T. Marshall Kelly on WOCG, which has a worldwide internet listening audience.
During the period of December 2006 through March 2007, the Singing Men had the distinct honor of performing a series of four concerts with the King's Heralds who hold the certified distinction of being America's Oldest Continuous Quartet. The series of concerts took place in Atlanta, Georgia; Charlotte, North Carolina; and Birmingham and Huntsville, Alabama.
The motto for the Singing Men of the Oakwood University Church is "A Ministry That Makes A Difference". Their determination is to utilize the gift of music they have received from God to make a difference in their own lives as well as the lives of those with whom they share their ministry. Their music provides a refreshing oasis of spiritual enrichment so urgently needed in this fast-paced world.
