St. Olaf Choir
The St. Olaf Choir is deservedly one of the best-known choirs in the world. The work of the choir's first two directors, the father-son team of F. Melius and Olaf Chrstiansen, had a legendary influence on the development of choral singing in 20th century America. In 1968, the choir's third director, Kenneth Jennings, stepped in. His influence led the choir to include work with instrumental ensembles and occasionally the use of piano, organ, and handbells or electronic synthesizers.
From the choir's website:
The St. Olaf Choir, with 75 mixed voices, is the pioneer a cappella choir in the United States. For nearly a century, the choir has set a standard of choral excellence and remained at the forefront of choral artistry. Conducted since 1990 by Anton Armstrong, the St. Olaf Choir continues to develop the tradition that originated with its founder, F. Melius Christiansen.
The St. Olaf Choir is internationally renowned for a unique combination of superior choral singing and the presentation of challenging choral programming with a vast repertoire that encompasses the entire history of Western music, from Renaissance polyphony to new music. The St. Olaf Choir transcended America's limited early 20th century choral tradition with the introduction of a cappella singing of the highest level, creating a new model for the widespread choral growth that followed.
