St. Olaf Choir
One of the oldest still-existing choirs in the United States, the St. Olaf Choir is deservedly one of the best-known. The work of the choir's first two directors, the father-son team of F. Melius and Olaf Chrstiansen, had a legendary influence on the development of choral singing in 20th century America. Since 1948, the choir's members have been exclusively students at the college. In 1968, the choir's third director, Kenneth Jennings, stepped in. His influence led the choir to include work with instrumental ensembles and occasionally the use of piano, organ, and handbells or electronic synthesizers. The choir's current director is Anton Armstrong, who stepped in in 1980.
