Sweet Honey in the Rock

Sweet Honey in the Rock is not just a singing group; it is a traveling and community-based cultural institution, dedicated to the preservation and celebration of African-American culture through performances. The ensemble began in 1973 under the guidance of founder and artistic director Bernice Johnson Reagon. The group takes its name from a song, which is based on a religious parable about a land so rich that, if you crack a rock, honey will flow. Sweet Honey in the Rock has been awarded Best Women's Album (1979) and Best Gospel Album (1985) by NAIRD, and in 1989 the group received a Grammy for its performances on A Tribute to Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly.
