This award-winning Christian sextet broke new ground in a cappella in the 1980s, paving the way for the popular revival of R&B vocal groups. Their complex jazz harmonies, original songs and vocal pyrotechnics represent some of the best a cappella ever recorded. Back in 1980, Oakwood College freshman Claude McKnight formed an a cappella quartet that grew into a sextet named Alliance. After some key member changes due to graduation, the group was signed to Warner Brothers in 1987 and changed its name to Take 6. Their self-titled debut album won a Grammy in 1988. Subsequent albums have included instruments (they are all instrumentalists) but of late the group has nicely balanced a cappella and accompanied songs.
