Ladysmith Black Mambazo
It began with a dream. In 1964, factory worker and amateur singer Joseph
Shabalala dreamed that "children of many colors and cultures sang to me in tones and harmonies which were so unique and special, that I knew they had come to teach me the sound I had been searching for." Shabalala set about recruiting members for a singing group, beginning with his own family members - brothers and cousins - and teaching them the harmonies he had heard. The group perfected its traditional sound, called "Isicathamiya," winning every local competition it entered. A radio broadcast in 1970 brought about their first recording contract.
Since then, the group has recorded more than 30 albums and sold more than three million records. Their collaboration with Paul Simon on his Graceland album and tour brought Ladysmith Black Mambazo international recognition. Simon also produced the group's first U.S. release, Shaka Zulu, which won a Grammy for Best Traditional Folk Recording in 1987. The group is also a cultural emissary for the new South Africa. They traveled with Nelson Mandela and F.W. deKlerk to Oslo, Norway in 1993 when the national leaders accepted the Nobel Peace Prize, and performed at Mandela's inauguration as the country's first black president.
