--------------------------------------------------------------------
For 30 years, Western Wind has been singing a wide range of a cappella music, largely grounded in classical and sacred Jewish works. So this 100% vocal jazz album is a break from their past - but you would never know it by the quality of the performances on this enjoyable recording. At times the sound is reminiscent of the style of the modern Swingle Singers - impeccably tuned lush chords sung with well-crafted dynamic range. They open with a romping rendition of "I'm Beginning To See The Light", followed by a luscious "Mood Indigo". The title tune begins with a madrigal-style interpretation of the verse, which slips almost unnoticeably into jazz for the chorus. Along with three Duke Ellington and three Thelonius Monk tunes are "Leaving on a Jet Plane" by the late John Denver and a frolicking interpretation of "Sh-boom". A few of the 13 pieces are accompanied by piano and string bass. (45:59, 1997)
