The Chordettes' career illustrates the varied twists and turns vocal harmony can take. The group was one of the first female barbershop quartets, as one of its founders was the daughter of a SPEBSQSA president. They were discovered by Arthur Godrey (host of a TV variety show) in the early 1950s, then Godfrey's bandleader took the group out on their own. The Chordettes had a megahit with '40's-style "Mr. Sandman" in 1954, and through their eight years of fame passed through country, doo-wop ("Lollipop") and early rock & roll ("A Girl's Work is Never Done"). While none of the 10 cuts here are a cappella, the Chordettes' tight vocal harmony stands on its own. This CD is a great introduction to the Chordettes' sound. (1995)
