Western Wind continues an exploration of Jewish music with a focus on Spanish Jewry. Unlike the pre-20th century Jews of northern and eastern Europe, whose language of daily use was Yiddish (a form of Medieval low German), the Jews of Spain spoke a mixture of Arabic, Turkish and Hebrew called Ladino, in which much of this music is sung. Even after their expulsion from Spain during the Inquisition, the Sephardic Jews carried their tradition of music being an important part of daily life with them. This album contains a lifetime's summary in one exquisite picture, with songs about babies and children, adolescence, weddings, death and more. The beautiful "Irme Queiro La Mi Madre" (from the babies and children section) is one notable highlight, as is the Middle Eastern-tinged "Que Quieresh De Mi," from the "wife, husband, family or singing while cooking" section. Some of the album has violin, percussion or other accompaniment. (73:32 1992)
