The tune for this folk hymn first appears in a shape-note arrangement in 1812, set to a text beginning, "Grace! 'Tis a charming sound." It has appeared in every edition of The Sacred Harp with the title, Ninety-Third Psalm. Over 100 years later, Anne Buchanan collected a version of this tune, set to this haunting text about Noah's dove, from the singing of a Virginia woman.
