Lenten Folk Singing From the Hvar Island

"In its rich and diverse cultural history, the Hvar Island, just off the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, carries the best of what is an integral part of Mediterranean cultural heritage and tradition. The culture of Hvar Island extends from the times of the ancient Illyrians, Greeks, and Romans to the Croatia of today. The program on this recording is characteristic of a particular type of folk singing that is performed on Hvar Island during Lent as a part of a unique form of religious musical expression. This specific way of singing, which is over 600 years old, has its roots in the distant past. Traditionally tied to Lent and Holy Week, it dates back to Gregorian chants, and Middle Eastern spiritual hymns." (Description taken from the liner notes.)
