The four Brahms Volkslieder presented in this edition belong to different collections o the composer's folk songs, and were composed at different periods of his life. This editor has performed them very successfully as a cycle, in which their contrasting musical textures created what might be described as a miniature symphony...Special attention has been given in the translation to retaining not only the meaning and mood of the poems, but also the onomatopoetic quality of certain key words, such as stiller and shadowed, and important final consonants, such as kluften and hidden
