Coats, The: The Caroler - Christmas With the Coats (CD)

Santa shouts in The Coats' "Lookin After the Reindeer," "Alright Rudoph, let's go for a ride!" And what an exciting and surprise-filled ride the Coats take us on. Six of the CD's pieces are originals, starting with "The Caroler," a song with exotic rhythms and minor key harmonies, reminiscent of the actual locale of the Christmas story. This Middle Eastern theme is carried into the following carol, "Do You Hear What I Hear," making this familiar song into something very new. Other stops on this exhilarating ride include "Good King Wenceslas" to a Carribean beat in the "Joy Medley," a joyful medley indeed; and southern, gospel-y "The Christmas Song," another original. The Coats know that celebrating includes dancing and they bring us to our feet with "Put the Merry in Merry Christmas." "A Star to Follow" is an example of the Coats' ability to convey the spirituality of Christmas in a way that all can embrace. Jamie Dieveney (the vocal arranger of most of the disc's cuts) puts a thrilling "space age" sound to the ending of the sometimes dirgey "We Three Kings." Okay, I admit it, this reviewer loves this CD. As they urge us to do in "Put the Merry in Merry Christmas," I'll be "feeling it" in December and July and hope you will, too. "These four Seattle based guys have done it again. "The Caroler" is by far the best that I have heard yet from them. They have returned to their a cappella roots; however, there are several percussion tracks on the cd. Great gift for The Coats fans! Add it to your collection."
