Composed in the thirteenth century, Summer Is A-Coming In is the earliest-known example of a round, of six-part music, and of a ground bass. The original version of this well-known tune actually includes two rounds, one for four voices (originally tenor) , in which the melody is sung at different points of time to provide its own harmony, and one for two voices (originally bass), which is sung as the pes or ground to also provide its own harmony. The earliest source is attributed to a medieval manuscript from Rreading Abbey in England. The composer is unknown.

Although it would be quite effective to perform this very joyful work a cappella, the use of recorders or other woodwinds, strings or keyboard would also be acceptable. Early performances often included instruments for doubling or replacing vocal parts. Flutes or recorders should play the soprano and alto parts one octave higher if those instruments are employed to duplicate the voice parts. Additionally, performers may consider employing separate flute and cello parts provided here to enhance the contrapuntal texture of this version.
