Homeland is a brilliant mix of classic choral literature, God-and-Country favorites, and contemporary patriotic songs, exquisitely performed by Brethren.
Although the repertoire certainly stands alone, what makes this recording so distinctive is the stunning musicianship and vocal quality of this ensemble. Whether singing the rhythmic setting of Mark Hayes's A Mighty Fortress or the haunting Mack Wilberg arrangement of The Dying Soldier, Brethren delivers beautiful interpretations of anything they sing.
The stirring rendition of The Star Spangled Banner, by Russell Mauldin, the great hymn, God Of Our Father's (with brass), or the inspiring a cappella arrangement of God Bless the U.S.A. are examples of Brethren's wide musical range. The title cut, Homeland, is perhaps the most climactic of all selections on this CD. The singers, accompanied by orchestra and organ, will mesmerize the listener with a breath-taking rendition of this work by Gustav Holst, arranged by Z. Randall Stroope.
I am amazed at the versatility of these musicians as they master any musical genre they undertake. They sing with equal ease whether singing an a cappella anthem, a choral standard, or a gospel piece. Homeland truly is choral music at its best!
