This setting of a sixteenth century French poem celebrates May Day, the mid-point between the vernal equinox and the summer solstice, which in many traditions marked the beginning of the pastoral summer season. The poetry is by Pierre de Ronsard (1524-1595) who was known as the 'prince of poets' by his own generation. He was one of the most prolific and best-loved poets of the sixteenth century...
