This is a monster of an album! The jazz octet serves up adozen meaty pieces that make you want to keep hitting the"repeat" button. They open with Kurt Weill'ssophisticated "The Saga of Jenny," and the menuincludes rhythmic re-interpretations of two Beatles tunes,"We Can Work It Out," and "With A Little Help FromMy Friends," a finger-snapping "Walk BetweenRaindrops," and some luscious originals (the title song,lush "Blue Meridian," and more). The group's sound isunique, grounded by a basso profundo and topped by asuper-soprano. As an ensemble they often deliver dense, complexharmonies with impeccable tuning (how do they do that?). Musicaldirector Charles Mead (who does not perform with them) craftedthe highly original arrangements. This recording especiallyrewards a great sound system - our best listen was on qualityheadphones. An artistic triumph, sure to please any vocal jazzfan! (55:23 1998)
