The annual Harmony Sweepstakes competition features regional contests around the US, culminating in a final, adjudicated "competition" San Rafael, California in May of each year. This compilation gives us the highlights of that evening, recorded live. 2005's winners were Groove For Thought, but there are some great performances by the other regional winners - Chapter 6, Undivided, Face, Cartoon Johnny, Fiveplay, Moodswing, Traces and Firedrill! There's a nice little mix of jazz (like "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing" and "Paper Moon"), pop (Groove for Thought's "Joy to the World" puts both jazz and pop together), and gospel (Trace's cover of Take 6's "Mary Don't You Weep" is really cool) songs here, and the recording quality is pretty good as well. All the groups were definitely at the top of their game. Take a listen and see what some of the best in contemporary a cappella's sounding like these days. (57:22 2005)
