Icelandic pop artist Bjork has always followed her own path, and here it leads her to explore a variety of "all-vocal" textures. There's nothing here to grace the airwaves of pop radio, but there's a wealth of material for the artistically adventurous and avant-garde aficionados. On the tracks where Rahzel supplies the beats you get a twenty-first century version of beat poetry, a cappella ("Who Is It," "Where Is The Line") - thought-provoking or irritating, depending on your willingness to have an open mind. At times she is an ethereal soloist backed by the Icelandic Choir (as in one of the few Icelandic language pieces, "Vokuro"). Other times she overdubs layers of her tortured solo voice "Oll Birtan"). She likes being obscure and inaccessible - even the liner notes are black on almost black - so her music demands focused listening to tease out meaning from her artistic exploration. A couple tracks have piano or synthesized bass, and many have "programming" (possibly just of human-generated sounds), but this is the closest that an internationally recognized, typically accompanied pop artist has come to the a cappella domain since Todd Rundgren's "A Cappella" album almost 20 years ago. It will be especially rewarding to those fascinated by the intersection of the human voice and the digital studio. (45:45 2004)
