The first thing that strikes one about this album is that it's so CLEAN. The production (all done by the group, by the way) is solid, the voices are in tune, the entrances and exits are all together, the vocal percussion riffs are great - it's Lysol clean. This may explain why it leaves this listener with a sanitized kind of feeling. Maybe it's that the opening track ("Up the Ladder to the Roof") has been done a lot. Granted, they do give it their own treatment (maybe that's where the title of the album comes from), as they do with many other standards - "You Don't Treat Me No Good," "Mustang Sally," and Flying Pickets' "Only You" among others. Their arrangement of the Mint Juleps' "Don't Let Your Heart" is the standout cover on the album. Of the five originals on the album, "Live and Learn" is the most interesting, pairing a reggae verse with a straight-pop chorus. They close the album with Duruflé's "Ubi Caritas" - a very surprising choice, done very well, with a modernized feeling to it. That just shows that these boys have paid their choral dues and have not forgotten from whence they came.
