Take 6: Brothers (1996 CD)

This album completes the group's migration away from their acappella jazz roots, a trend that began with the departure ofMervyn Warren. The songs are all accompanied R&B (with theexception of a brief a cappella interlude on "Can't StopThinking 'Bout You"). Thematically, though, the songs remainmostly subtle Christian texts, where the listener may onlyrealize the meaning by seeing capitalized "Me,""You" and "He" in the liner notes. The doubleentendre extends to the album title as well. Founding member MarkKibble brought in brother Joey to take Warren's place severalyears ago, and on this album Claude McKnight III's brother Brianplays a major role. Brother Brian had participated in one song ontheir last recording "Join the Band," but here he iswriting, producing and playing instruments (at times incollaboration with others) on six of the 10 songs - nearly aseventh member of the band. The album is very tight, clean, smooth and pleasant, but to those of us who remain dazzled bytheir unaccompanied efforts it just doesn't seem"special." (42:39 1996)
