Daniel Kepl, of "Performing Arts Review," describes Jester Hairston's arrangement of Elijah Rock as a ". . .timelessly energizing arrangement... A rhythmic low figure begins and ends the piece quietly while the body of the song is a rocking, bluesy dialogue between the parts." Jester Hariston helped preserve Negro spirituals, writing and arranging over 300 of them himself. He died in 2000, just two years short of of his 100th birthday. Hairston worked as a choral director, educator, actor, singer, composer and arranger, and was known in recent years for playing Rollie Forbes on the NBC sitcom "Amen" in the 1980s. Piano is provided for rehearsal purposes.
