The Fisk Jubilee Singers were the first internationally recognized group of African American singers. After the Civil War, Ttreasurer of the newly founded "Fisk Free Colored School," George White, was fascinated with the slave songs he heard He collected over 100 of them, and in 1871, he took a group of the school's singers on a singing tour to raise money for the financially faltering school. These are the seeds of the still acclaimed Fisk Jubilee Singers. The enhanced CD's packaging is very clever, resembling a book and providing a history of the Singers and their origins. How thrilled George White would no doubt be, to see the beautiful faces of the 2003 ensemble shining out from the back of this CD cover. White is credited with preserving so many slave songs, many of which are known by most Americans, who may not even know their source. When he conceived the idea of touring his singers, George White said he was hoping to "sing into the hearts" of the people. That is exactly what these 18 authentic, stirringly performed songs do.
