This recording singularly illustrates the profound influence of blacka cappella gospel on rock & roll. Sam Cooke, who later was called "theman who invented soul," here is heard at the beginning of his careerwith this popular gospel group. The early cuts (1951-1952) such as "ItWon't Be Very Long" are a cappella, sometimes with a drum accompaniment.Then guitar or piano are added on subsequent songs. The final cuts from1956 and 1957 immediately precede Cooke's break to pop; songs like "MeanOld World" are just a half step away from Top 40. Very cool! (66:001991)
