This fine Smithsonian/Folkways recording was compiled and annotated by Sweet Honey's Bernice Johnson Reagon and produced in collaboration with National Public Radio. Spirituals have been performed many ways; this album highlights several groups whose "concert tradition" of singing spirituals goes back many years, notably the Fisk College Jubilee Singers who started performing in 1871. It's illuminating to hear these African-American groups draw on both that tradition as well as European choral performance styles. Nineteen songs with generous liner notes. (62:19 1994)
