Some historical recording collections are thrown together, and others are assembled with TLC. This is an example of the latter - an extremely well-annotated collection of 25 mostly gospel songs by 13 groups, recorded between 1927 and 1942. The mostly a cappella performances trace the evolution of black quartets from a barbershop sound to the jubilee style popularized by The Golden Gate Quartet. The liner notes are some of the best we've seen, a thoughtful and well-researched essay on this American music genre and its relationship to doo-wop and to what we now call barbershop music. For students of a cappella history, this one's a must! (73:42 1997)

"Irresistable recordings. It's very hard to find the Famous Blue Jay Singers, but you won't be sorry once you've heard "I'm Leaning on the Lord." Ditto everything the Golden Gate Gospel or Silver Leaf Quartets ever did. This is like a distillation of everything I liked best off of the wonderful six-CD set "Goodbye, Babylon.""
