This historic recording gathers mostly obscure groups, all a cappella. They begin with Ernia Mae Cunningham ("In the Presence of the Lord"),mixed voices on a rather scratchy '78. The Davis Bible Singers areremarkably restored (men's a cappella on "Daniel Saw The Stone"), and theDiamond Four presage doo-wop nonsense syllables on "Sleep On Mother."There are four tunes by the Fa Sol La Singers, showing the genuine shapenote singing style. Fairview Jubilee quartet performs a regional variationof "Them Bones." The CD concludes with the first f our songs ever recordedby the Soul Stirrers, with Robert H. Harris on lead - an important figurein gospel who would later be replaced by Sam Cooke. (69:02 1997)
