In a Composer's Note to this piece, Andrew Carter confesses to some trepidation when it comes to setting poetry to music, knowing it might be possible to obscure the poet's ideas But he explains that he chose John Donne's poem, "No Man is an Island," written at the time of the Second World War, because fifty years later, "Donne's incomparable lines call loudly to us to add our voices." He says that his childhood in a family of change ringers has given him the ability to bring the bells' special quality into this piece through voice. The duration of the 8 page piece is 6 minutes. There is a mezzo-soprano solo.
