This piece was arranged by Steven Sametz for Chanticleer. Their performance is available on Chanticleer's CD "Wondrous Love,". You can also listen to The Princeton Singers perform this and other arrangements and works of Steven Sametz on their CD "Old New Borrowed Blues," .
The Music Dictionary defines "Villanella" as: "A Renaissance polyphonic vocal form, usually with a simple tune in the top voice, and somewhat homophonic, regular rhythms in the lower voices." The villanella was popular especially in Italy, and retained its separate identity through concurrent evolution of the madrigal." The lyrics are in Italian and an English translation is provided. The title "O come bali bene bela bimba," translates as "O how well you dance, beautiful girl." Keyboard notation is included for rehearsal purposes. There are optional solos for Soprano and/or tenor and Soprano and/or Alto as well as Soprano alone.
