After many years away from his a cappella roots, McFerrin returned! He draws in other singers, including several members of SoVoSó, from his musical circle of friends to join in this song cycle of circle songs; he and the Circle Song singers were nominated for Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award Artist of the Year, following this album's release. He invented this musical form in which a repeating rhythmic and harmonic pattern is used as the foundation for improvisation. All eight songs are wordless, yet the nonsense syllables help distinguish one from the next. At times they are pure scat, but in some songs (such as Circlesongs 3 and 6) they sound like an invented language. Also, the backgrounds evolve in subtle variations as McFerrin (and at times other singers) groove on top. Several pieces have complex evolving rhythms built over Brubeckian meters (Circlesong 4). McFerrin's widened musical palette is revealed from time to time, as the improvisations draw in classical, Asian and other world influences. While circle songs are an acquired taste for many listeners, the mix of intricate planned structure and improvisation in these pieces make them worth the effort. (42:46 1997)

"A funny story-why I love my ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend..simply because he took her off my hands, no, no, really but mainly because he introduced me to the most beautiful, back to some sort of ancient roots of music and group coherence. Some of the songs are gentle,some bassy and not one to skip. "
