his is the third album by Utah septet Octappella (yes, there are only seven of them, contrary to what their name would lead you to believe...), and it just goes to show you that practice does make perfect - or pretty darn good, anyway. The CD is a collection of some of the guys' favorite inspirational songs, with a fresh new twist (calypso-flavored opening track "Come Come Ye Saints" is a very good indication of what's to come) thanks to arrangements by group members Matt Cropper, Wes Brewer and Jeremy Griggs (among others).

The tunes may be traditional, but the style is definitely contemporary, with a rich, full sound that just fills you up with warm, fuzzy feelings. The group is very adept at blending the traditional and contemporary, as is apparent in tunes like "Anthem to My King," which is based on a melody by Gustav Holst, and features guest vocals by Mindy Gledhill. The melody is beautiful, and while the arrangement isn't a huge departure from a hymn-like style, the piece is quite striking. They do straight "traditional" well too, on hymns like "Praise to the Lord, the Almighty," but give a fresh feeling to classics "O Holy Night," "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "Nearer My God to Thee/Beautiful Savior." Much of the "fresh" feeling comes from these young men's voices, which are full of vitality and energy. The album's production is top-notch too, which helps with that deep, luscious sound. It should be noted that the last track on the album, bonus track "Be Still My Soul" is an absolutely beautiful solo by Wes Brewer with Matt Cropper on piano. Gorgeous! (63:30 2005)

"I first listened to this CD for the first song "Come Come Ye Saints" as it was written by my wifes ancestor. I was very pleased to hear their rendition and they did a great service to the song. Some songs are bumpy, but overall they are excellent. It is very rare that I can find a CD where I just hit play and listen to it over and over while I'm at the office, but Worship is one of them. As a wonderful surprise the very last song "Be Still My Soul" is beautifully done and it alone makes the CD worth having in any person collection. 5 Stars!"
