Of the two "Hims" CDs put out by Voice Male, this reviewer prefers the earlier album (so this is the place to start!). The male sextet's sound is more emotive and expressive here. On pop-sounding tunes like "Homeless" and "Prayer of the Children" they really show the sensitivity they possess with their voices. The straight-ahead hymns (like "I Need Thee Every Hour" and "Brightly Beams Our Father's Mercy") are just that - straight. Well-sung, but straight, without much expression or dynamic changes involved. Kirby Shaw's "Star Spangled Banner" starts out pretty mild, but the soloist breaks out a little on the bridge to give it some "edge." Spouses Mike & Jill Bearden duet sweetly on "A Child's Prayer." Overall, this is a more relaxed album than the second in the series, showing the more dynamic, unique side of the group. (31:20 1997)
