This CD marks the end of the transition The Real Group has made from "world's greatest vocal jazz group" to a great contemporary vocal band singing original material. True, their "Thousand Things" is spectacular vocal jazz, a new jazz standard performed with a vocal big band sound. More typical, though, are songs such as "Substitute for Life" - a sarcastic view of soapoperas, sweetly delivered. "Run Run Run" is an energetic critique of fast-paced modern life, while "Big Bad World" and "Eyes of a Child" show theinfluence of parenthood.
