This CD marks the end of the transition The Real Group has made from "world's greatest vocal jazz group" to a great contemporary vocal band singing original material. True, their "Thousand Things" is spectacular vocal jazz, a new jazz standard performed with a vocal big band sound. More typical, though, are songs such as "Substitute for Life" - a sarcastic view of soapoperas, sweetly delivered. "Run Run Run" is an energetic critique of fast-paced modern life, while "Big Bad World" and "Eyes of a Child" show theinfluence of parenthood. Indeed, with all the family photos you could call this "The Real Group Family Album." Impeccably produced with extensive "voicetrumental" effects, this is yet another fantastic Real Group recording!
