Pacific Chorale: Musica
Be the first to review this product
This CD is, in the words of the liner notes, a celebration of "the wonderful variety of American choral literature that has been composed or published in this century." After the first listen one can't find any more fitting words than celebration. All the selections were penned after 1930 and this is definitely 20th Century choral composition at its finest. Performed both beautifully and powerfully, this music is incredibly moving. These are great compositions and the Pacific Chorale, despite its size, performs them with incredible sensitivity and agility. The soft sections are like a whisper and the loud moments are full and robust. Among the finest moments are Rene Clausen's "O Vos Omnes," a multilingual piece written for double choir, the oft-performed yet always stirring "Alleluia," by Randall Thompson, widely considered a choral masterpiece, and the ethereal "Fall Softly, Snow" by Daniel Moe. "Musica," written by the chorale's conductor, John Alexander, could not be more suitable as the title track, as it celebrates the "soothing and restorative powers of music." This is an incredible CD and a wonderful tribute to modern composition. (72:44 1997)
