We were pleasantly surprised and very impressed when we receivedthis submission from this Denver octet. Not only is their repertoirevaried and difficult, their execution of these arrangements by Derric Johnson("This Land is Your Land," "The Star Spangled Banner"), JonathanRathbone ("The Drunken Sailor," Dvorak's "New World Symphony"),Ward Swingle ("Flight of the Bumblebee") and Jerry Rubino ("A Quiet Place")is nearly flawless. The clarity, flexibility and stylistic appropriateness of thesevocalists make for a very balanced and delightful sound. Not only are they ableto sing together coherently as a unit, there are some great solo voiceshere as well. Group members Darrin Drown and John Griffith take turns atarranging here, with a sweet cover of Billy Joel's "Lullaby (Goodnight, MyAngel)") by the former, and beautiful jazz "That's All" by the latter. Not tobe confined to classical and jazz genres, they even include an Abba cover("Take a Chance on Me") and 60's hit "When Will I Be Loved." If you'relooking for some wonderful, make-you-smile vocal harmony, this one'sfor you! (41:31 2002)
