Under the direction of Gene Aitken, the University of Northern Colorado isknown for consistently high-quality vocal jazz ensembles. The Axidentals,Et Cetera and Sus 4 are among the cream of the crop of singers at UNC. Amostly-live recording, the bulk of the tracks are from a concert whichfeatured the three groups. The Axidentals generally perform with a rhythmsection, covering such diverse sources as Pat Metheny and Michael Jackson,with two a cappella numbers arranged by Randy Crenshaw. Et Cetera is thenewest of the groups, formed in 1989, and dedicated to a cappella jazz.Highlights of their set include "Didn't We" and "Son On The Moon." Sus 4'ssmooth harmonies close the show, wrapping things up with terrificarrangements of "How Sweet It Is" and Benny Goodman's classic "Air MailSpecial." Five of 16 tracks are a cappella, and also worthy of note isthat 13 of these arrangements are available from UNC Jazz Press. (59:27 1991)
