This is a REALLY cool album! These eleven, all-original songs by young Finnish composers showcases Rajaton's pop abilities, with songs like lush, beautiful opener "Kivinen tie" featuring the gorgeous female voices in the group; the guys can hold their own too, on tracks like "Lunta." Reggae-like "Venelaulu" is just too smooth and groovy.
The cool thing (there's just one??) about these songs and arrangements, is that there's always something really interesting going on - whether it's in the background parts or the solo - it's all very well done, with great attention to detail - but never automated-sounding or mechanical. The harmonies the group utilizes vary between traditional, diatonic chords and some neat, more modern-sounding jazz/pop choices. Very nice. In pieces like "Nälkäiset linnut" they combine the two very nicely - traditional, almost folk-like melody that evolves into something VERY pop. Just TRY to sit still, we dare you! The production work on the album is top-notch, done by well-known Finnish pop producer Mr. Leri Leskinen. There have been lots of comparisons between Rajaton and Swedish vocal jazz/pop a cappella emirates The Real Group, but I think this album will establish in people's minds that while Rajaton has a similar smooth sound and vocal makeup, they definitely have a style all their own. But don't just take our word for it - listen to the sound files and see for yourself! (41:49 2005)
