One attribute of a cappella is the versatility of the voice, the ability to cross genres and break down the walls built by the conventional music business. This recording is definitely a genre-buster. For some of the pieces ("Aurinkolaulu," "Were You There,") award-winning Finnish mixed sextet Rajaton brings their jazz and pop sensibility to sacred material normally given a classical music treatment. The result is exquisite, yet hard to describe. In other pieces ("Benedic anima mea domino") the texture draws from contemporary "serious" music from Finland - not avant garde, but certainly contemporary. The texts are in Finnish, English and Latin ("Stabat Mater" mixes Latin and Finnish!); thankfully, all are translated in the liner notes. Listen with an open mind and be amazed! (41:05 2002)
