Rajaton is an amazing vocal sextet from Finland. As in previous albums, they bend genres with their fusion of jazz, pop, and classical styles. This 2 disk Christmas CD is entirely in Finnish and there is no help for English speaking folks in the liner notes. Disk 1 is jazzy, lively and recorded in a studio. Several songs are written by group bass Jussi Chydenius. He is as talented a writer as he is a singer. There are three songs which will be familiar to all listeners; track 6 Kulkuset (Jingle Bells like you've never heard before), track 10 Jouluyo (Silent Night) and track 11 Joululaulu (The Christmas Song, aka Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire) The arrangements are fascinating and beautifully sung. Disk 2 was apparently recorded in a church. This disk is much more solemn and classical in style and oh, so beautiful. Can one listen to a Christmas CD sung entirely in Finnish and still get the message? In this case an emphatic yes. (67:07 2003)
