This Austrian trio is Hubert Sandhofer, Maria Augustin and Ali Foeger. You may recognize that last name as a huge a cappella advocate throughout Europe and the Eastern Hemisphere. Ali has been involved in organizing many a cappella festivals and is a fierce promoter of the art. Using their own arrangements as well as those of others (Acapelicans' Carl Pannuzzo's arrangement of "Hear From Happiness" makes an appearance), Singapur gives us this great, heartfelt debut recording. Each of the singers has solo abilities, which is important in an exposed situation like a trio. Maria's voice is soulful and strong (check out Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason"), as is Hubert's bass. Ali's tenor is a wonderful counterpoint to it all. They do pop songs (Bonnie Raitt's "Something to Talk About," the aforementioned Chapman tune), folk songs ("Malaika," haunting and resonant "Quiet Joys of Brotherhood" and traditional Australian Aboriginal lullaby "Inanay") and unusual fare that you don't often hear, like Gordon Lightfoot's "The Way I Feel." They seem totally suited for all the styles they do - earning high marks in the repeat listening test. This one passes with flying colors! (44:56 2003)
