Max Q comes to the table as a debut quartet on this, their highly anticipated debut CD, with impeccable credentials. They embody the trend in men's barbershop of championship quartets dissolving and mixing their musical DNA with other dissolved champion quartets. Lead Tony DeRosa most recently sang in Platinum (as baritone), and before that with Keepsake - both of which were gold medal winners. Bass Jeff Oxley won the gold with Acoustix in 1990. Tenor Greg Clancy is assistant director of The Vocal Majority, and son of director Jim Clancy. Gary Lewis sang with Tony in Platinum - tenor then, baritone now. No shortage of talent there! So it's no surprise that this CD is musically exquisite, and at times literally breathtaking (such as on the really extended lead note on the tag of their "Smile Medley"). They of course nail the barbershop tunes - "When My Sugar Walks Down The Street," tender "If I Had My Way" and KIBers delight "You Tell Me Your Dream." Their slightly jazzy "Shenandoah" is lusciously emotional, and they comfortably swing David Wright's chart of "Sing, Sing, Sing." They also manage to pull of a respectable version of Van Morrison's "Moondance" arranged by Marshall Webb (of Return 2 Zero). These guys are certainly the rising stars of 2004! (44:16 2004)
