Stoloff, Bob: Scat! Vocal Improvisation Techniques
Be the first to review this product
Well-performed scat is a joy to behold - but half-baked scatis painful. Thankfully, this book is now available to lift theveil of mystery surrounding the secrets of successful vocalimprovisation. Stoloff is Associate Professor at venerableBerklee College of Music, and his teaching experience shows inthis extremely useful book/CD combination. The book includes auseful brief overview of the history of scat singing, fromSatchmo to McFerrin. Then the exercises begin, starting withbasic jazz rhythms matched with syllables, and quickly move todiatonic scale sequences with a challenging mix of rhythms, accents and syllable choices. There's no question that extensivework on these exercises will provide wannabe-scatters with strongfundamentals. There are also a number of a cappella andaccompanied backgrounds with both Stoloff scats in detailednotation, as well as open choruses for the singer to let it rip. Finally, there are a number of useful vocal percussion exercisesand suggestions, although these could easily be expanded to awhole volume themselves. So whether you aspire to be the nextElla, or just want to avoid sounding stupid when your group givesyou the "How High the Moon" solo, Scat! is highlyrecommended.
