An a cappella gospel songbook for choirs and quartets. Transcribed and arranged by Tony Backhouse. From the introduction by the author:

"This book is aimed at choir directors, teachers, choristers, quartet singers and those interested in traditional black gospel and South African gospel. Most of the songs here represent a repertoire and performance style from a period between the 1920s and the 1960s; much of this repertoire and style continues, at a grass roots level, to be sung by church choirs, congregations, and quartets. A couple of exceptions were written in the 1990s, but were composed for a cappella performance and to my ear have a traditional sound to them. Gospel choirs and quartets these days generally have instrumental accompaniment, so I imagine the composers of these pieces were consciously harking back to the perenially popular style of the older congregational song."

Each song has performance, recording listing (where available) and historical notes by Backhouse. Appendix includes extensive links to other gospel music resources. Arrangements included are scored for both SATB and TTBB groups. See song list below for specific songs' voicings.
