This mixed quintet from Italy has some real strengths - like blend, maturity and arranging skills - and they're all showcased very nicely on their debut CD "Belfagor." From the rather gothic cover, you'd expect them to be extremely serious, dark characters. But nothing could be further from their musical sound - it's energetic, bright and willing to take chances (I mean, how many international groups do you know that cover of John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Road"?). Their version of Sade's "Smooth Operator" just sucks you right in to their smooth harmonies and blend. "Autumn Leaves" and "Walking Down the Street" show that they have jazz chops as well as pop sensibilities, and latin-flavored numbers "Rosalina" and "Tropicana" remind you that these guys are definitely worldly - and worthy - musicians. True to their a cappella roots, though, they include the famous "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and a respectable cover of Rockapella's "Zombie Jamboree." What else would you expect from a contemporary a cappella group, on any side of the Atlantic? (37:30 2004)
