The Big Four Quartette, Sweet Adeline Champions of 1953, was unique in many ways. They were the first "Internation" champions of a singing organization then on the brink of explosion. They were the first Sweet Adeline champion quartet to sing with a full-resonated sound. They were the first Sweet Adeline quartet to be accepted as an "equal" in the world of men's barbershopping. With their great sound and warm humor, they opened the door to exposure in the world of professional media entertainment. In short, they led the way for the rest of us.
No one could tell their story better than Mary Waters - she sang tenor with the Big Four during the last five years of their 15-year run. This was an incredible experience for her. It had such a positive impact on her that she felt compelled to record for posterity their story. As she puts it, "It's payback time."
