Jester Hariston wrote the words and music for this piece for solo voice, mixed chorus and piano. At points in the music he calls for sound effects ("ghosts, squeaky doors, owls, etc."). The piece is fun to perform and to listen to. Mr. Hairston helped preserve Negro spirituals, writing and arranging over 300 of them himself. He died in 2000, just two years short of of his 100th birthday. He worked as a choral director, educator, actor, singer, composer and arranger, and was known in recent years for playing Rollie Forbes on the NBC sitcom "Amen" in the 1980s.
